A Golden Finish: Lessons from the Court

This past weekend marked the end of an unforgettable volleyball season for our daughter Malaika and her club team — and what a season it has been! As first-year players with the club, we didn’t quite know what to expect, but the journey has been nothing short of amazing. Six tournaments, four medals — two bronze, one silver, and now, their first gold. A perfect finish.

This final tournament was a sweep. The team won every game they played, leaving everything on the court and showing just how much they’ve grown over the past few months. And Malaika — wow. The progress she has made this season has been tremendous. Her confidence, skill, and teamwork have blossomed, and I couldn’t be prouder.

Of course, volleyball is the ultimate team sport. You can't serve, set, and spike your way to victory alone. This group of girls played for each other — not just with each other. They lifted one another through every match, stayed focused, and trusted the process. Their synergy on the court was inspiring.

I have to give a huge shoutout to their incredible coaches, Hannah Rallis and Paloma Corrigan, pictured here.

With unwavering dedication, sharp insight, and a passion for the game, they’ve not only trained these girls in technique but also instilled confidence, discipline, and heart. Their calm leadership, strategic guidance, and belief in each player have shaped this team into something truly special. Watching these young athletes grow under their mentorship — not just in skill but in character — has been an absolute privilege.

And as I reflect, I realize this isn’t just a story about volleyball. It’s a lesson for all of us. Whether in organizations, relationships, families — we are all team players. My former boss used to say, “No one succeeds alone,” and this season proved just that. Behind every win is a collective effort — a shared vision, sacrifice, and support.

So here’s to the victories, the lessons, and the incredible team that made it all happen. Congratulations, girls — you’ve earned every bit of that gold. And thank you for reminding us all of the power of teamwork.
